The title of this article from Plumbing Engineer caught my eye: “Design Assist Is Built on Communication and Trust.” These words matched my experience with successful design assist project delivery.
The article describes aspects of design assist that are important to a successful project. One is team selection based on the culture and willingness of the team member to collaborate on both the design and in solving field issue that may arise during construction. Another is open communication between the project designers and the constructors.
One aspect that is very important but not always on the list: having a champion for design assist on both the design side and the construction side of the team. A champion is someone who will shepherd the design assist process and not allow the team to fall back into the old way of working.
